WORKING WITH THE EBRD IN THE SEMED (MENA) REGION:
THE CASE FOR INVESTMENT AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR U.S. FIRMS
with
Hildegard Gacek Managing Director, Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Region European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was created in 1991 to provide financing primarily for private sector projects in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
The EBRD is the largest lender and private equity investor in CEE and CIS, with acurrent portfolio of over EUR 65 billion, and an operational track record in the region which stretches back over 20 years. The United States is the major shareholder of the Bank.
The Southern and Eastern Mediterranean is known within the EBRD as SEMED (comprising Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia) and is the latest region in which the Bank is working to boost economic and democratic change. All four nations, in their different ways, emerged from the events of the Arab Spring in 2011 with more accountable political systems and plans to reform their economies.
The EBRD’s operational priorities for the region includes a vast range of sectors including: development of financial sectors, provision of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) finance via banks and equity funds; supporting infrastructure, particularly development of municipal services; supporting energy sector including energy efficiency, agriculture and manufacturing among many others. Throughout the region, the Bank will focus on promoting the private sector and SMEs to help create jobs. This will be a unique opportunity for you to learn more about the EBRD activities, capabilities and relevance to your own potential undertakings and interests within these four countries.
